Le murmure du coq

コンタドールの総合優勝で幕を閉じたジロ・デ・イタリア。最終日の個人TTで、選手一人一人の背中やゴールシーンを見つめながら、それぞれの3週間、あるいは選手人生そのものを感じて、少々しんみりしてしまった私です。

以下、今年1月に購入したcycle sports　2007レビュー号から、シモーニさんのインタビューの和訳。シモーニさんもその選手人生そのものを感じた1人でした。

★　ジーボ、この冬の調子はどう？
Gibo. how's your winter going?

かなりいいよ。今年はいつもより少々はめをはずして、プレゼンテーションと夕食会にたくさん出席したよ。全くトレーニングしてないってのが唯一の問題だね。
Pretty good. This year I've let myself go a bit more than usual and attended a lot of presentations and dinners. The only thing I'm not doing is any kind of training.

多くのライダーが既に自転車の上に戻っているのは知ってるけど、僕はいつも通り1月1日に本格的にトレーニングを始めるつもりさ。こうしていつも上手く行くんだ。他のライダーがシーズン開始から2ヶ月間、僕を苦しめることは承知、でもその後、僕の調子は良くなりだす。
I know a lot of riders are already back on the bike but as always I'm going to officially start training on January 1. It's always worked for me that way. I know the other riders will
make me suffer for the first two months of the season but after that I start feeling better.

★　貴方の新しいチーム　Diquigiovanni - Androni　のチームメイトや監督と既に集ったそうだけど、サウニエルデュバルでの2年間の後、非プロツールチームで走るということはステップダウンじゃないだろうか？
You have already got together with your new Diquigiovanni Androni team-mates and team manager Gianni Savio. Is riding for a non-Protour team a step down after two years at Saunier Duval?

凄く小さなチームだから賭けではある、でもチームとスポンサーが意欲的で大きくなりたいと思っているから、リスクを冒して満足さ。プロツールでないことは問題ではない。幾つかのチームは確かにその一部に値しないけど、プロツールは家族カーストと似たようなものだ　：自転車は資金が最大かどうかだけに限らない。政治やエキストラルールは自転車が現在直面する問題を解決しないよ。
It's a gamble because it's a smaller team, but I'm happy to take a risk because the team and sponsors are ambitious and want to grow. Not being in the ProTour isn't a problem.
The ProTour is like a closed family caste but some teams definitely don't deserve to be part of it: cycling isn't only about having the biggest budget. Politics and extra rules won't resolve the problems cycling faces at the moment.

★　リカルド・リッコがメジャーなステージレースのチームリーダーになり、貴方はサウニエルデュバルを離れたのだろうか？
Did you quit the Saunier Duval team because Riccardo Ricco became team leader for major stage races?

違うよ。リッコは凄く良くなったし強いライダーだ。皆が今年（2007）のジロやツール・ド・ロンバルディアでそれを見た。彼はサウニエルデュバルと2008年の高額な契約を獲得した、それと共に結果を出す義務が生じる。だから彼が僕のdomestique（フランス語=アシスト選手）をしてくれるだろうとは考えられなかった。僕も彼のアシストになるつもりはなかった。
Did you quit the Saunier Duval team because Riccardo Ricco became team leader hr major stage races? ''No. Ricco has improved a lot and is a strong rider,. we all saw that at the Giro this year and at the Tour of Lombardy. He's got a fat contract with Saunier Duval tor 2008 and with that comes responsibility to get results. so there's no way I could expect him to be my domestique, and I wasn't going to become his domestique.

★　2007シーズンは満足の行くものだったか？
Were you satisfied with your　2007 season?

まあまあかな。みんな僕が常に上手くやると思っているけど、僕はいつも少しの結果を求める。モンテ・ゾンコラン山頂ゴールの山岳ステージで勝利し、ディルーカ、若いシュレクに次いで3位。2度ジロを制し、5度表彰台で終えている。これはかなり満足だよ。
I can't complain. Everybody always expects me to do well but I always come up with some results. I won the big mountain stage at the summit of Monte Zoncolan and was third overall behind Di Luca and young Schleck. I've won the Giro twice and finished on the podium ｆive times. That's pretty satisfying.

★　2008シーズンがプロとしてのラストシーズンになるというのは本当か？
Is it true 2008 will be your last season as a professional?

僕にはわからない。一日一日、レースレースで物事を考えるつもりだよ。2008年の主要目標はジロ・デ・イタリアと7月のマウンテンバイクマラソン世界選手権、開催地Val di Soleは僕の地元トレントバレーの向こう側なんだ。今年は7位、特にバイクテクニックを磨くトレーニングをするつもりだよ。
I don't know. I'm going to take things day-by-day and　race-by-race. In 2008, my major goals are the Giro d'Italia and then the MTB Marathon World Championships in July in Val di Sole, on the other side of the Trento Valley from where I live.I was seventh this year and will train specifically to improve my bike skills so that I can give it a shot.　

思うにジロは最終週が非常に厳しくなるんじゃないかな、そしてこれは僕にとって好都合だ。残念なことに、ジロは決してビッグマウンテンステージだけではない。タイムトライアルももちろん要素、そして3週間走りきることについてもね。幸運にも、僕はそれが得意だ、だから、たとえ2008年が僕にとってプロ15年目だとしても、僕のライバルは僕自身さ。
I think the Giro's going to　be very hard in the final week, which suits me. unfortunately, the Giro is never just about the big mountain stages. The time trials will certainly be a factor, and it's also about going the distance over the three weeks.　
Fortunately, that's something I'm good at, so I consider myself a Giro contender even if 2008 will be my 15th year as a pro.

第20ステージ、前日大きく遅れて表彰台が少々遠のいてしまったわけですが、ステージ優勝を目指して果敢にセッラの跡を追いかけたシモーニさん。いつもの毒舌はリッコに譲り（汗）　黙々とその存在感を示し続けてくれました。（やたらTT速くなってるし('◇'*））　世代交代を感じるジロでもあったけど、その中でキラリと光るベテランの姿は何とも言えない味わいがあって、やっぱりまだまだ見ていたいなと思ってしまいます。
